Gefilte fish: baked, not boiled [Toronto Star] …With a little history lesson on gefilte fish in there.
Although it’s not food related: Passover Quotes, Greetings, And Passages For Passover 2010 [Huffington Post]
More to follow, no doubt.
Wishing my Jewish friends a happy and meaningful pesach. I leave you with the new acoustic version of the smash YouTube hit, “20 Things to Do With Matzah.” starring William Levin and Michelle Citrin.
(Thanks to Esther K. for the video.)
Today is National Cream Filled Donut Day and Eat a Hoagie Day.
My first introduction to the hoagie was the Cosby Show. I’ve never seen one in person. I’ve never eaten one. Hoagies are Cosby fiction as far as I’m concerned even though I know they exist.
For that reason I offer you this Cosby video. It’s not as funny as his muppet-filled dream that involved a talking hoagie (YouTube wouldn’t give me access to that one) but it’s funny. More food holidays after the video.
August 26: National Cherry Popsicle Day (I don’t know if they’re referring to the brand name or the general term. “Popsicle” is to “ice pops” what “Kleenex” is to “facial tissue” and, sadly, “iPod” is to MP3 player.)
With the long weekend I forgot to post food holidays yesterday, and I was so looking forward to it! You know why? Because yesterday was “Grab Some Nuts Day”. I thought of it (and mentioned it) on Saturday and should have posted it asap. On the bright side, no nuts were harmed as a result.
August 3: National Watermelon Day (ate some)
August 3: Grab Some Nuts Day
August 4: National lasagne Day
August 5: National Waffle Day
August 5: National Oyster Day
August 6: National Root Beer Float Day
August 7: National Raspberries in Cream Day
August 8: National Zucchini Day
August 8: National Frozen Custard Day
August 9: National Rice Pudding Day
July 6: National Fried Chicken Day (yuck) July 7: National Strawberry Sundae Day (yum) July 8: National Chocolate with Almonds Day (even yummier.) July 9: National Sugar Cookie Day July 10: National Piña Colada Day (Yes! And it’s on a Friday. How convenient?) July 11: National Blueberry Muffin Day July 12: National Pecan Pie Day (I heart pecan pie.)
June 23: National Pecan Sandy Day. I’m kind of sorry that I Googled this because I found the Urban Dictionary definition, which is gross (think “camel toe”).
June 24: National Pralines Day. Personal fact: When I was young(er) one of my favourite ice cream flavours was pralines and cream. I’ve always been nuts about anything caramel (no pun intended).
June 25: National Strawberry Parfait Day. Do you remember the episode of Muppets Tonight in which Prince did a spoof of “Raspberry Beret” called “Raspberry Sorbet”? Now I’m singing “strawberry parfait” to that tune. Strawberries are in season.
June 27: National Orange Blossom Day. I’m not certain what the context for “orange blossom” is here (the flower of the orange?) but I chose to link to the alcoholic drink.
June 10: National Black Cow Day (An ice cream float made with vanilla ice cream and root beer. According to some websites it also has chocolate syrup, whipped cream and maraschino cherries)
