Toronto bakeries: Where to go for Valentine’s Day

valentines-love-cake2Whipped Bake Shop

Okay, so the day’s more than half over*, but my honey is making me a souffle for dinner, I’m in charge of oysters and dessert, and I realize that I could have/should have posted a Valentine’s Day feature this week. One peek into my inbox for press releases and a quick Google, and here’s a list of 5:

Xococava

Offering Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Tart ($4.25) Chocolate Heart Cakes with Amarena Cherry Glaze ($3.75), Milk Chocolate & Hazelnut Rochers ($2.50/each),  Cluizel Hugs and Kisses in Dark and Milk Chocolate ($10.00), Take-Home Spiced Pasilla Drinking Chocolate ($13.75) and Cinnamon Marshmallows ($6.00) +

A “Be Mine” Filled Chocolate Heart Trio with Milk Chocolate with Salted Hazelnut, Dark Chocolate with Amarena Cherry and White Chocolate with Mountain Cranberry ($14.00/box) and

Xococava Liquor Box of Hand Roll Truffles ($22.00/box)

Chocolate Mini Mendients ($14.75/bag) with Milk Chocolate with Espresso Bean, Candied Lemon & Fleur de Sel; Dark Chocolate with Sour Cherries, Pistachio & Candied Rose Petals

1560 Yonge Street

Cheese Boutique

Not a bakery specifically, but their bakery section had some Valentine’s Day themed desserts when I was in yesterday. It was my first visit. That place is like Disneyland for foodies. Open until 7.

Prairie Girl Bakery

Post City magazine declares Prairie Girl’s red velvet cupcake to be one of the city’s best. For Valentine’s Day, the bakery is swapping its usual cream cheese icing with vanilla bean.

The Sweet Escape Patisserie

Cakes, cupcakes, macarons and individual desserts. It’s all excellent.

24 Tankhouse Lane – in the Distillery District
416-214-2253 (CAKE)

Vegan? Gluten free?

Tori’s Bakeshop (2188 Queen St E ) can take care of the former, while Bunner’s can take care of both.

Read what I had to say about Tori’s after I visited last spring.

Still looking for dinner plans? Read Blog TO’s 35 Toronto restaurants for Valentine’s Day 2013. Check the comments at that page for reader suggestions not on the list. Also not on the list: Tall Boys Valentine’s Day Prix Fixe (838 Bloor Street West).

Happy love day and if it’s your birthday, as it is my brother’s & two other people I know, happy birthday.

*It was, half over, and then my web host had issues. By now some of these bakeries are closed but rather than let a good blog post go to waste I’m promoting the bakeries for year round and next Valentine’s Day.
